After leaving Waitomo we continued along route 37 to Marokopa and along the coast road to Awamarino before getting back to 'civilisation' and on to New Plymouth. We decided to park up for the night in a camp site in Ohakura, a beach town not far from New Plymouth with spectacular views of Mt Taranaki. The beach has black volcanic sand which looks quite strange when you're not used to it!
The following day we drove to Egmont national park and some of the way up Mt Taranaki. The mountain scenery was beautiful and we stopped off at Dawson Falls for a few snaps.
After that we took the rest of the day to travel along route 43, better known as The Forgotten World Highway en route to Ohakune for the Tongariro Crossing.
