Finally, my felucca ride. A felucca ride has been a childhood dream of mine. I studied in a boarding school in this small little town in Negri Sembilan and my parents sometimes would come over and visit me during the weekend. Life in a boarding school was boring and stressful especially during the exams.
It was an exam weekend and I should be studying but instead I decided to go watch a movie with them - The Spy Who Loved Me (Roger Moore and Barbara Bach). I remembered this particular scene where James Bond and his beautiful Russain spy took a romantic felucca ride down the Nile. For that two hours, I was transported into this world of exotic adventure . The cool breeze in the nice quiet cinema and a hauntingly beautiful song made me forget for that two hours my stress and worries for the exams - it was I guess pure escapism. Many years later, I watched that movie again but I didn't give me that same feeling ( it fact, I thought the movie was bad) I guess I always hoped that seeing and experiencing the real thing would help me recapture that wonderful feeling of freedom and exhilaration I had so many years ago.
Certainly, this is the most relaxing way to see the Nile. There is something in the way the felucca gracefully sail without motor, or a nasty diesel smell and when we do the zig zag across the Nile and just let the wind take us , it is exhilarating and it is a very liberating feeling . With the cool breeze against the face , I did get that wonderful feeling so many years ago in a little cinema in Kuala Pilah.
