From the flooded town of Mui Ne we headed to Hoi Chi Minh city (HCMC), the old capitol. Hanoi was then made the capitol after the Vietnamese war, and the South wasn't allowed to have the capitol, anyway! As we were only there for a day we squeezed as much as possible in.
First stop was the reunification palace, (Vietnams's equivalent to the houses of Parilament). This is now a museum, and has been since the day in 1979 when Northern Vietnam invaded and took it over. It's quite eerie in there as everything was left just the way it was found on that day. Upstairs is all the swish room, for the prime minister equivalent, while downstairs is the planning rooms. This is where the south planned there attacks. Alot of the equipment is still as it was. (the America's were with the south, and they lost!)
To our amusement we found the security room, which was bare, so i'm guessing thats why they lost!
From there we trotted off to the war remnants museum, which is full of Vietnamese propaganda. Horrific though. They have old tanks and helicopters, fine, then they have the photo's of victims of war, not so nice. Alot of these photo's were taken by war journalist's, who were killed in the war. Alot of agent orange sufferers, with the photo's to prove it! Many of the victims of agent orange, but mainly their children all live on a commune, and need constant looking after. alot of them are so deformed they can't do anything for themselves!
This place really made you feel sorry for the Vietnamese and wanted to hate the Americans, but again, 2 sides to every story, and i can imagine the Vietnamese were just as bad!
Next to the museum was a prison where the Americas (and southern Vietnamese) kept their POW. Tiny, tiny tiger cages, and a working guillotine. They also shipped alot of the POW to an island just off S. Vietnam for torture. again photo graphs to prove it! It was horrible!
To brighten my day up, we paid a visit to the smiling man, oh yes KFC, never been so happy to see him.
Paid a quick visit to Notre Dame cathedral, which had alot of Neon Saint figures, quite strange! Maybe they'll take off in England!
