D-Day Is Here

January 19th has arrived. Beth and I say goodbye to our frantic looking Pomeranians, Baby and Syd. They know this is not our usual 2 hours trip to the gym. Our suitcases give us away. We are leaving them. Baby acts as if she's ready to promise to behave for life…if we agree to stay.

As instructed, we arrive 2 hours early at Pensacola Airport. Thanks to a fantastic Delta gate agent and some top notch TSA personnel, we have our computer issued boarding passes and are thorough security in ten minutes. The flight is on time. We arrive in Atlanta without problem.

In Atlanta, I re-check our boarding passes. Atlanta to Amsterdam is perfect. I look at Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro and my jaw drops. KLM has moved us from row 9 to row 23. They have moved us out of the Comfort Economy section for which we paid extra.

Beth sends a text to Gulf Breeze Travel asking for help. Brenda takes our issue up the flagpole to supervisors at both Delta and KLM. Delta finally admits their "door problem" last night caused the problem. All agree to have our seating restored by the time we reach Amsterdam.

After 6 months of planning, our trip is off to an uncomfortably tense start thanks to Delta. Be very alert and carefully review every document you receive from the airline. One glitch causes cascading problems down the line.

We fly north from Atlanta over New York – Boston – Toronto – St Lawrence Seaway – Newfoundland – and Labrador. Somewhere over the North Atlantic and south of Iceland, the day changes to January 20th. As we pass over Northern Ireland, the captain announces we will arrive in Amsterdam one hour early (7:19 A.M). Flying time will be 7 hours and 22 minutes from Atlanta to Amsterdam. That’s good.
