We arrived to the capital of the world at 14:00 on Monday, the 17th of March. (St. Patrick's Day!). We had our passports checked by U.S. Immigration back in Dublin, so we virtually left the JFK terminal in New York in less than 30 minutes. We took a YELLOW cab to our hotel (Royal Park Hotel) located on the 97th Street West on Manhattan. It took us about 45 minutes to get there. There is a flat rate for a taxi fare between JFK airport to anywhere in Manhattan - 45 USD plus tolls. It worked out 50 USD with the toll, so we gave 60 to the driver. We were a bit tired and our first impression of New York seen from the perspective of the cab was a bit mixed. We are going through Harlem and even though we are not racists, we felt kind of like a minority there.

We checked in quickly and hit the city. We took a long walk to Columbia University (116th Street West) campus which was absolutely amazing. Oh maybe, I am just exaggerating, because this is the school to which I am going to apply next after finishing my M.Phil in International Relations in Dublin. Even though Michael does not share my plans, he was impressed as well. After Columbia University we took a stroll through Central Park back to the hotel. That was more than enough for the first day.
