Students from Casa Grande HS, Petaluma HS, and many other from around Sonoma County spent two weeks in the La Descubierta, Dominican Republic to help build houses for three families. In La Descubierta we met lots of people and a lot of the kids were eager to help us with the construction of the houses. We stayed with host families and traveled to a small mountain town called Los Pinos for two nights to help build one house there. I stayed with a family of 8 and close by were several of people who went on the trip with me. Every day we would meet with our team for the trip and go off to continue work on a house for a family. My favorite part of the trip was the time we spent in Los Pinos. My team and I hiked up the mountains behind La Descubierta to Los Pinos, it was extremely hot and really hard. We then walked into town and were divided up into groups of two to spend the two nights with a new family. I stayed with a family with my friend Nisha and they were very welcoming and friendly. After almost two weeks we returned to Santo Domingo for a few days to see the city and go shopping. We also saw some caves that were very cool. The whole trip was great and a big learning experience, I would recommend a trip like this to anyone. You will meet lots of great people and make friends with locals. Plus, you'll pick up the language easily :)
