Midigama, village of grapes, is a small gathering of homes, guesthouses and roti stands stretched out along either side of a section of the Matara - Galle highway.  We are working our way back up the West coast towards Colombo before heading inland and uphill towards Kandy with the promise of cool air and hot showers.

Our host Chatu had started the guesthouse business only 15months earlier and with the name of his home trickling down the online grapevine, he could be confident of a healthy trail of travellers at least until the season ends.  Admittedly geared towards surfers with its board racks and outdoor showers, it took sometime for Lee to warm to it... I think her first words were 'I'm not a teenage boy... I hate it' :-)  By the end though, she had been won over by the home cooking and kindness of the family.

The break I surfed was called 'lazy left' and was formed by the constant 6ft swell tripping over a shallow bank of coral.  This meant that in between waves you could catch glimpses of coloured fish underneath and turtles nearby. On the first evening,  I remember looking up gazing into the cloudy hues brought up by the setting sun.  I let the thoughts of the surf slide to the back of my mind feeling that there was something worth taking in.  I relax and look and feel, my legs dangling in the now tranquil waters, my upper half basking in the warm evening air, I was able to enjoy the simple pleasure.  Engaging again with my surroundings my attention is brought to a wave forming in the back ground.  As it rolls by the others, it remains empty and I catch it and it carries me back towards the bay.

As I sit back and relax with my legs dangling over the front of my computer chair - the bell rings in my head and I just take a deep breath... Mmmm.... Goa??
