Where I stayed
YWAM Facilities
Even though we have accomplished building a house, we aren't done with our work in Mexico. Arrangements have been made for us to go to an orphanage in Tijuana. The first part of our visit to the orphanage was to see the babies. Babies, babies everywhere. We were able to hold them, feed them and, of course, give them some love. It amazed me when we were in the room how little the babies cried. I thought for sure one would start crying and they all would follow. But they were all very good. One particular little girl won Larry's heart. He took her outside to the playground, took her on the swings and played with her on the playground. To show her appreciation, the little girl gave Larry a rock from the playground. (Side note: When we got home, I noticed that same rock was sitting on one of our shelves in our living room. Seems he couldn't leave the little girl's souvenir behind.)
I held some of the babies and fed them too. They needed someone to clean the kitchen so Allison, a girl from our church, and I took care of that. After cleaning the kitchen, I latched on to a cute little girl, Brianna. Now she won MY heart. She was so loving, hugged me and held on to me. I wanted to take her home with me.
After giving the babies attention, it was time to go over to another building where the older kids stay. The skit about David we had prepared for the kids went perfect. The kids were so interested and participated with enthusiasm. After the skit, we had arts and crafts. Wow, these kids are so sweet. It takes everything in your power to keep from taking two or three of them home. One of the arts and crafts we had them do was a heart. One little boy put a beard on his heart/face and showed it to Kaptain. He was proud of the likeness. The room was filled with laughter as the kids enjoyed the arts and crafts, the balloons, the face painting and the fingernail painting. Some of the kids are sad, though, and it breaks your heart. A couple of times I had to go outside, turn my back on everyone and shed a few tears.
When we were ready to go, another little girl touched me. I waved goodbye and said "adios" to everyone on the playground and a little girl (not one I had talked to or played with inside) came up to me and just hugged me and held me. That REALLY made me cry.
We left the orphanage and went to a Mexican (surprise) restaurant in Rosarita Beach for lunch. Then we had a little time to go site seeing, do a little shopping, enjoy a little R&R. We went to the beach and before we knew it, about ten other people from our church were sitting with us. It was a beautiful day and gave us time to relax together.
We headed back to the Baja YWAM facility. We need to pack because we are leaving for home early in the morning.
After our brief stop at the Baja YWAM facility we climbed back in the vans and headed to a party. There is an American couple that live in Tijuana and they open up their house every Friday to treat the YWAM volunteers. We were so blessed they included us. They had food and Wii games. It was a fun evening which included adults and kids.
Reflection of the day: It really feels good to give some love and affection to the kids at the orphanage. Most of the children are happy and some have a very sad story. It really felt good to be able to do something for those in need. Just giving our time and love, I'm sure made a difference. It is also a good feeling to be with the YWAM people that are so giving, unselfish and a pleasure to be with.
