Where I stayed
Country View RV Park
On August 27, we left Hill City and stopped at Mitchell, South Dakota. We stayed at Jerry & Sharon's Famil-E-Fun RV Park. Nice little family owned park. We got to see the dogs round up the chickens back in the chicken coupe while we had cocktails at the site. Yup, we are out in the country. Mitchell is known for its Corn Palace. We had been there before so we watched Molly (Larry & Shirley's dog) while Larry, Shirley, Don & Maria went into town to see the Corn Palace. It is a Palace that has corn covering the entire building, We could have disconnected our car and driven in with them but since we were staying there only one night and since we had already seen the Corn Palace, we decided to stay behind at the site.
On August 28, we drove from Mitchell, South Dakota to Altura, Minnesota, which is near St. Charles. We stayed at Lazy D Campground. I guess since we were staying only one night, they put us way in the back of the park. Not a problem, we, again, were only staying one night so we set up, watched pre-season football on the TV outside and got ready to take off again the next day.
On Sunday, August 29, we pulled into Mukwonago, Wisconsin, which is a few miles outside of Milwaukee. We stayed in the Country View RV Park, which was out in the country. There were burros in a field right across the road from where we were staying.
On Monday, August 30, we drove into Milwaukee and went to the Harley Davidson Museum. Interesting. They have motorcycles all the way back to the No. 1 unit they built. After walking through with the self-guided audio tour, we ran into Don & Maria and went across the street (still part of the Museum grounds) and had lunch. We then went back across the street (also, still part of the Museum grounds) and saw the Evel Knevel exhibit. Unfortunately, when I just now went through the pictures, I realized I had no pictures of that exhibit. Oh well, it was interesting. Just take our word for it.
On the way home, we found a truck along the side of the road with corn in the bed of the truck and a sign indicating the corn was for sale. No person, just a truck and a sign and a box in which to deposit money for the corn you choose to buy. WOW....that wouldn't work in good ol' California! Anyway, we couldn't resist and bought some corn from the truck. By the way, the corn was DELICIOUS.
On Tuesday, August 31, we went back into Milwaukee but this time to Old World, German town. The first place we went to was the Spice House. When we walked in the front door the wonderful aroma hit us. They had every kind of spice you can think of. Then, since we are in Wisconsin, we, of course, have to get some cheese. So, our next stop was at the Cheese Mart to get some cheese. We were able to sample a few and bought a variety of cheeses. After the Cheese Mart, we went for a little walk in the area waiting for the restaurant to open so we can have lunch. There is a water inlet in the area and we went on the bridge to get some pictures. I thought I saw a Brewery, that would be a good place to go, on the other side of the bridge and went ahead down the street to see if it was in fact a Brewery. It wasn't, so I headed back to where Larry, Shirley & Kaptain were at the bridge. Then, oops, while I was down the street, they raised the bridge and I was on the other side from my "people". Not to worry, they lowered the bridge shortly thereafter and I joined my husband and friends.
After our walk, we went to the restaurant, Mader's, to wait for them to open for lunch. Then I got a text from Don indicating they are at the Cheese Mart....which was across the street from the restaurant. No need to text back, I just yelled across the street. Don and Maria joined us and the restaurant opened. We now had a ringer with us because Maria is German and Mader's is a German Restaurant in a German town. I ordered a beer sampler and they brought our six glasses of beer (yum) and we ordered our German lunch (again, YUM!). After we ate lunch, Maria ordered a pretzel from them. A GIANT Pretzel. Well, each couple had to order one. When the waitress brought it out, we saw that we could have ordered one for all three of us. I didn't get a picture but to put it in perspective, I had to cook it in the oven and only 1/2 of the pretzel would fit on the cookie sheet. THAT'S GIANT!!!!
There was one more place in Old World we wanted to visit. Usinger's Sausage. They are supposed to be the best. We had to wait a while to get the sausage but we found out later (when we cooked them for dinner) it was well worth the wait!
Now that we had cheese and sausage, we were only missing the beer. We headed to Miller Brewery to take a tour and, more importantly, the free samples. On the way, we stopped at Lake Michigan to get pictures of one of our Great Lakes. Looked just like a beach and ocean to us. Anyway, after pictures we continued on to the Miller Brewery for our tour which turned out to be a great one!
On the morning of September 1, we set off for Kalamazoo, Michigan, and then Detroit area.
