Today was our first full day aboard Midnatsol and our first excursion. We left the ship at 1:30 and, after tendering to shore, we boarded a bus for a trip to the Geiranger Fjord. The town of Geiranger, at the end of the fjord, is a quaint little village with year round population of 244. Traveling to the top of Eagle Road, we were able to look out over the fjord and saw the village from the distance. It was a beautiful view. Returning to sea level, we took a ferry across another fjord to continue on to the village of Linge. St. Olav is said to have traveled through this valley and spent some time in Linge. He is also reported to have performed several miracles while staying there. These included the building of a road to connect the high point of the mountain to the valley. Today there is a road in approximately the same location called the Trollstigen. The area through which the road travels is said to have been inhabited by trolls. In ancient times, these trolls were blamed for anything bad that happened in the area. There are several areas on the mountains where trolls are said to have been turned into rock since they were caught out of hiding with the arrival of daylight. The road itself is quite an experience. I'm glad we weren't doing the driving. The grade is 10% and the hairpin turns are numerous. There are two major waterfalls along the route. We then took another ferry and a sub-aquatic tunnel to get to the city of Molde. Molde is well known for having been completely destroyed by Nazi bombs during World War II. When the Germans first came into Norway the Norwegian King and his court escaped from Oslo along with the country's treasury of gold. They moved to Molde which was eventually destroyed in the German's search for the gold. Following dinner in a hotel in Molde we rejoined our ship.
