Montezuma is located on the Pacific Ocean, on the most eastern point on the Nicoya Peninsula. Although the entire Nicoya Peninsula is known to be extremely touristy, Montezuma feels like it in a world of its own. Down a long dirty road you'll find this small cluster of cafes and shops, Once again the feel here is very relaxed, and hippy-ish with the number of local street venders selling everything from sea shells, hand-made jewelry, and marijuana. All of these characteristics make it feel like a mini Byron Bay. Although none of the beaches will ever really compare to Australia’s, the beaches here were none the less quite good quality. Reminding me of Western Australia, the beaches slope at intense angles down to the ever crashing surf. Eager for a surf on the Pacific, we wandered toward the famous Malpais Beach, but soon became tiresome and settled for watching a few local rip up an amazing point break. It would have been nice to hit the surf as well, but in order to, we would have needed to rent boards in Montezuma and trek for kilometers to the beaches. Jason didn’t bother going for a surf, and it was as always way too big for me. Although a relaxing place to chill, it was pretty pricey and not all that much to do there. We decided to head to Nicaragua early in order to meet up with my fun and crazy Danish cousin, Helena. It would be a long 6 years since we have met up, so I was extremely excited to get going.
