Took the Intercity bus at 12:50 p.m. from Dunedin for what I thought was a 5 hour drive to Christchurch but was 6 hours. The driver had a very folky mannner, and at each town he would tell us what the history was and 'that it was a very nice little town, where you could stop for a picnic or go fishing'.  Also he would say he was dropping people off at their rquested stops but he hoped' that friends or relatives were picking them up as there was no public transportation or taxis available'.  These little missives he would announce on the sound system on this full, double decker bus, and as well he kept repeating that we had to make a stop to pick up some boys and take them to Christchurch.  And then he told us he was taking longer than usual to get the bags out because his back was acting up, and he was in pain! while he was driving!
Anyway got to the bus depot at 7 p.m. and had a vague idea where my hostel was so got some directions from the bus driver's helper that took bags off here, and I started walking. Found it after a few minutes, it is very central. Am in a 6 bed dorm (4 of us, including Carolina from Brazil who had arrived on the Magic Bus earlier that afternoon). I was so tired I chatted with her for awhile as the 2 others had gone out for dinner apparently and then I went to bed.  Carolina left early this a.m. back on magicbus and I chatted with my 2 roommates, Brida and Quiva from Ireland near Dublin. They are young, 20 somethings who are doing the 'working in NZ for a year' and Brida has her first day at work today as a waitress in a pool joint.  They are very sociable even though Quiva was sick in bed. Funny how with my ear plugs I rarely hear anyone coming and going, as I didn't hear them come in last night.
Since the Stonehurst hostel (Grovesnor street across from Latimer Square) is ok, I decided to stay for the last 3 nights of my journey here and paid for 3 more nights ($22 NZ = $17.71 Can. $ (NZ $ dropping in value)  a night;  it has a pool table, and a heated pool - it was 17 here yesterday and it is supposed to be colder than Australia!), a big kitchen, laundry facilities, a couple of open air decks, a tv room, a bar, etc.) and wandered downtown, which is very close by and have to update my blogs.  Also will go to the Canterbury Museum, the Art Gallery, the Christchurch Cathedral and ride on the free downtown shuttle.  Apart from taking in a couple of movies (it is is their International Film Festival now), I will be winding down.
