Ok, its a brief visit but i like Santiago so far! We´ve spent most of the time trying to rebook another Antarctic cruise but we did make it downstairs from our hostel (and a great hostel it is too, really, really nicely done out...i splashed out and got a single room, which actually consisted of a double bed and a single, and how nice it is to stretch out in a big bed!!, plus there´s french doors leading out to a little balcony) to a nice little restaurant downstairs where menu of the day included both a pisco sour and a glass of wine. We then caught up with Ali and went out for dinner...wasn´t feeling overly hungry since we´d had a late lunch so thought i´d go for their albondigas special expecting nice little meatballs - wrong!!!!! I got 2 huge meatballs the size of baseballs plus a truckload of fries. Ali went for a soup which was under the entrees, but there was no way it was an entree, instead it was a huge bowl piled high with whole potaotoes, quarter of a chicken, corn cob and rice. We did notice most of the people around us were taking home doggy bags.......
We did our own winery excursion the next day with Ali. Caught the metro (which is a really good metro, efficient and clean) to our first winery Causino Macul (think thats the name) a family owned winery that makes a great little drop called Gris - looks like a rose but actually a cab sav (and roses are actually white wines)....and only 4U$ a bottle. Next stop was Conchuo y Torro (again, not sure of the spelling) but its the biggest producer of wine in Chile and pretty sure you can pick it up at Cool Wines at home. Both places gave you 2 tastings and a glass for your entry fee.....I´m determined to keep both glasses but not too sure how that will go consider I´ve broken most fragile things i´ve bought so far!!!
Then a final meal with Ali who´s on a speed mission to get down to Patagonia and back to BA in a couple of weeks so its unlikely we´ll catch up again in SA. ......bye Ali its been good travelling with you!!

What happened with the Antarctic trip?
The gap one we had booked was cancelled because the boat needed work on the engine. Apparantly it was in for the regular maintenance and they found problems. They´ve had to cancel at least 3 cruises so a lot of annoyed people! The new one we found is more exy but we didn´t have a great deal of choice but it does sound better so ce la vie!
