So finally my tickets are booked and I shall be coming home for a little vist in May/June. Two good friends of mine are getting married and I am so excited that I will be able to be there for it! I'm also looking forward to a catch up with all my friends and family! And also hoping to get my salsa fix in Cardiff as there is still a disapointing lack of social dancing here in Byron! I will be back on May the 25th until June 11th. If your free on any of these dates and fancy a catch up over coffee/dinner/drinks the send me an email. My diary is already beginning to fill up fast and I think it's going to be a whirlwind trip! Although Wyn is also missing everyone back home, he has decided to stay in Australia as he does not get holiday pay so it would be an even more expensive trip for him to make. Instead he has mentioned possibly going on a kayak trip with a friend, maybe to the Whitsundays.

At the moment i have another friend from home visitng, Jen. Shes on a working holiday visa and has been based in Sydney until now but shes looking for work either in Byron or Brisbane or possibly up in Cairns. (Another excuse for a holiday me thinks...) We've had fun the past few days since she arrived doing all the usual touristy stuff. Yesterday we went on a sea kayaking trip which was fantastic. However we were both pretty awful but I think thats what made it so fun!

It didn't start well when we failed to carry our kayak to the beach (they are surprising heavy don't you know?!) We had to be rescued by some guys who felt sorry for our lack of muscles! (definately not cut out for an army career!) Then we set off and i was promptly knocked clean off the kayak by a wave within seconds of leaving! Somehow the boat remained upright and Jen was still somehow sitting in it! Once we were out past the waves we thought 'this'll be easy' but however we are not cut out for kayaking it seems! Apparently the person at the front had to be brains and the person at the back the brawn. So that made me 'brains' and Jen 'brawn' both roles that we were not particularly suited to! (Although I'm not sure reversing the roles would hel;p either!!!) We kept going the wrong direction and at not a lot of speed! Everyone else seemed to be cruising along with little effort - not even flexing a bicep! Yet we were using every ounze of power we had to try and get our boat to move. There was a hole in it (?purposeful) and we kept sinking! In the end we had to be rescued by 2 guys who had to tow us out to sea! Embarassing!!!

Finally out at sea and being towed by another boat. What could go wrong now?! Well another wave took us by surprise and toppled the boat. For the 2nd time I got very wet! Lucky the sea was warm! So we had to get back onto our kayaks - easier said than done! I managed to turn the boat over quite smoothly 'hey this is easy' I thought. Wrong again! I then had to get onto the boat - tricky when everytime you pull yourself up the boat rolls towards you and ends upside down again! Jen eventually managed to get up (albeit not so glamourously!) and then next task was her steadying the boat for me to get in. This involves leaning the opposite direction to me. So Jen decided to lean back (whilst perched on the back of the kayak) Yes you guess it, next thing she was somersaulting back into the sea taking the boat with her and all I could see was 2 legs sticking in the air dropping into the sea in slow motion as she tried to presvent the inevitable. By this point we had been in the water for 10mins and everyone was in fits of giggles and a few very curious dolphins decided to come and investigate what all the fuss was about! We were literally 3 or 4 foot away from them! They didnt try to rescue us though! Probably far too amusing watching us flounder...! So at this point Jen and I had to be seperated (like naughty school children!) as it was impossible getting us onto the same kayak! I ended up with the guide and poor Jen was on her own in a boat that kept filling with water and sinking! I had it easy as it was suddenly a lot less strenuous with some real brawn behind me! (and in a boat that wasnt sinking...!) We then had to surf the waves to get back in which was a lot of fun although involved a lot of water going up my nose! However I managed to stay inside the baot this time. Poor Jen however did not so thats 2 dunkings each!

So maybe we are not destined to be kayak enthusiasts but we both loved it and want to go back again - probably much to the concern of the kayak guides! Needless to say I am just as shocking at kayaking as I was at surfing! Maybe we will try something on land next time - like horse riding...!
