So after a sad goodbye to Rachel and Sarah, it was only a week before our next visitor arrived. However it was not without complication. Heavy snow meant that Alaws plane was sat on the runway for 9 HOURS! Then it was rescheduled for the following day meaning that she arrived 24 hrs later than planned. As if the journey to Australia is not long enough..!! Anyway somehow Alaw and Wyn managed to cram in an already busy itinery into 3 days instead of 4 and spent a few days sightseeing around Sydney whilst I settled into my new job.

I know I moaned about my new job but I have to admit its getting easier. Its not quite so busy any more - perhaps because I am settling in and getting to know the patients, the staff and where everythings kept so my efficiency has improved! Still it can get very chaotic and I still think its apalling that they don't have 2 dr's working on a weekend! My last weekend shift was horrific with 10 rapid responses (ie peri arrest patients) but since then it has been much better. In fact if anything it's a little too boring - mostly cannulas and fluids, I feel like an FY1 dr all over again! But the alternative is the medical registrar post which is quite a large step up - no intermediate stages here! But in Australia you can be a med reg after 2 years experience (minimum of 4 in the UK) and so often I am referring to dr's the same stage as me. Therefore if they put me back on medicine I think I might step up to the reg position to save me from drowning in cannulas and fluid orders again!

After a whirlwind tour of Sydney Wyn and Alaw arrived back in Byron. Fortunately the weather was kind and we had 2 weeks of mostly sunshine and hot weather so we did a lot of swimming in the pool and the sea, a few coastal walks and on my days off we went to the Gold Coast for 3 days of themeparks. It was the 1st time we went to Wet n Wild which was fantastic. Lots and lots of rides including 1 with an almost vertical drop which dropped you into a huge funnel in a little dinghy which you rocket up each side before eventually dropping into a pool at the end. If I ever work out how to upload videos you might get to hear Wyn scream a little..!

The one thing Im really enjoying now is having most weekends off ( a rarity in the ED.) This weekend just gone, I met up with some of the other drs to go to a rodeo! Think cowboys, horse riding, whip cracking, throwing lassoo's and bull riding! It was certainly quite a show although I'm still not quite sure what I make of it. I know its tradition and all that but I felt very sorry for the poor cows and bulls! The rest of the weekend was less of an ethical conundrum and we went to a BBQ that evening with other friends and then the Beachy pub for live music on sunday. Yes weekends are definately a perk of this job!

Anyway, I'll upload some pictures soon. Thanks to Alaw for some of her piccies that she donated for the blog! I've also invested in a new point and shoot camera which can go underwater (for places its tricky to take a big DSLR!) so theres a few pictures in the pool! Just wish I'd bought it before the Whitsundays trip!
