A fair bits happened since my last update - I've started work and we have found a house!

The house is in a place called suffolk park which is on the outskirts of Byron Bay - about a 20min cycle ride to the main beach. We originally planned to live with the other uk drs and in the town centre but we realised living in the centre in summer when it's packed with backpackers would get pretty intense and were looking at a different price bracket to the others. The place we have found is ideal. Its a 3 bed brand new house on a quiet residential estate with a pool that we share with a few other houses. The house is a 5 min walk from a beach. We will be living with one other guy who owns the house but he's away most of the time as he works in sydney so he only uses it as a place to get away too on his time off so we will have the house to ourselves most of the time. He's a pretty cool guy. Bit older than us probably mid 30's, really relaxed, into his outdoor sports inc surfing and sea kayaking and works as a fire fighter. Were lucky to have found this place as most of the places weve seen for same money were not so great. One guy was clearly high - kept telling us how great it was that there was a shower! And his housemate was trying to sell the place (unsuccessfully) by telling us he was moving out ONLY because he found a place that was bigger closer to town and cheaper!! Although the place we found seems expensive (equivalent of 400 a month each) it is super cheap by australian prices which are extortionate - we saw one place that was 800 a WEEK! And bills are all included so it's not as bad as it sounds - probably similar to what we were paying in the UK.

Job is ok - bit scary having done GP and psych most recently so its been a while since I've even put a cannula in or seen an acutely ill patient. But everyones very relaxed and supportive and I'm sure I will get the hang of it soon. I've just been a bit unlucky getting some incredibly complex cases!  I get so much time off as everytime I work a sunday I get a day off in lieu (so thats 1 weeks extra annual leave in 10 week rota!) We also get paid extra everytime we work overtime or we work after 6pm and thats on tope of what seemed like a good wage initially! however cost of living will prob eat into it a fair bit!

We've found a good social circle here. There are lots of drs come from sydney to work for 10 weeks and theyre great fun. Weve also met lots of the nurses and social workers at a houseparty last night. It was a great party meeting loads of new people and somehow we ended up at a students union! Mind you theres not much else to do in lismore - everything closes at 8ish inc restaurants! But we have found 1 bar here which stays open and often has live music and free wifi. Luckily the social scene is much better in Byron! Ive also sussed out the salsa scene a bit. Not much social dancing unfortunately but there is atleast 1 monthly party which we are going to on saturday and there are plenty of lessons in Byron.

Anyway Id best go as im sat in tats (the bar) using Becks computer so I'd better give it back! If any of you fancy a catch up, I'm on skype and my username is leanne0333 so give me a call! (Just bear in mind we are 9 hours ahead here!)

Amy on

Wow, lovely to hear things seem good on the house front! You get to use a swimming pool too...it's just like Neighbours! I love it. Do you have any pictures of the house yet? I am sure you will get into the swing of things with the job. Much love xx
