Being one of Ireland's top tourist attractions, we couldn’t miss it. We boarded our first guided tour bus and cruised along with 30 or so other visitors through the Burren and to the Cliffs of Moher for, as the brochure put it, a day of fun and adventure! We were a little disappointed that the much anticipated "bus games and sing-a-longs" never occurred, but all in all, it was a good day and once again we felt so lucky to be experiencing some of these amazing sights first hand.

The Burren is a rolling, rocky area on the West side of Ireland, in County Clare. The word Burren comes from the Irish word boirreann and actually means “rocky place”, a perfectly descriptive name, and which is probably why it reminded us so much of our northern Canadian home. On our way through the Burren we made a stop at a family farm where we were led up the “mountain” by our guide, John. Not only did he feed us all sorts of interesting facts and history along the bumpy (yet “gentle” as the brochure promised) walk, but John also rewarded his groupies with some fresh baking in his grannies cottage once we had all made it back safely.

Having one hour to explore the Cliffs of Moher, we were amongst scores of scurrying tourists snapping as many photos as time permitted. They really were not only an amazing sight, but a dangerous one. Many tourists (despite the numerous safety signs posted) have wondered just a little too close to the cliff edges and have fallen victim (literally) due to strong wind gusts. Only after re-boarding the bus did we learn that they aren’t actually the highest cliff fronts in Ireland, but rather the third, leaving us determined to search out its taller competitors in the northern tips of the country.

Enjoying a day as escorted tourists,
Leann and Robyn
