What I did
Starting to Pack
It all began at the end of Junior year. I desperately wanted to get away, perfect my spanish, and try something new. So I started looking at programs like Rotary and AFS, however I was too late to sign up with any of them. Still interested, I looked into doing it on my own.
Danny Padnick, a friend of my parents, had gone to Colombia for a year and ended up marrying Astrid (a wonderful and gorgeous Colombian woman). I had dinner with them and started thinking about spending a semester in Medellin, Colombia. Eventually I had Skyped with my host family and started getting really excited!
Now I am just about two weeks away from leaving! There were/are many concerned friends and family that made me a little tentative about going to this country that once was in terrible civil strife. With all the talk about the Drug Wars and Cartels and Cocaine I was getting a bit freaked out, however at this point worrying isn't going to do me any good. I am working on gathering everything I will need for the next four months and beginning to realize that it is quite a lot. Also, getting my visa, itinerary, insurance, and classes all organized is a priority.
Most of all I am excited and have no idea what to expect. I don't think I'm aware of how long four months really is. I'm not even able to imagine what I will come across in my time abroad. All I've heard is that I won't want to come home when the time comes (December 30th). I'm sure I will miss the mountains, snow, friends, family, school, and home but for now I can't even think about coming home because I haven't even left yet!
I plan to update this blog daily while in Colombia and stay in touch with everyone. Feel free to comment ANY questions, comments. or concerns :)
