yet another rainy day here in juigalpa...REAL shocker! although a community member told me that on July 17th...to be exact...it will stop raining for one month exactly.  Amazing how good they are at predicting the weather.  I went to visit a community, La Laguna, the other day.  This community is our hardest to reach community that is about a two hour drive and then a 1 hour hike to reach it.   The busses dont go there very often so I got the PLAN people to give me a lift when they were going in that area.  Anyways, I was in the community and trying to make sure I hiked back before the rain came because if it rained the hike would be impossible to do and I would be stuck at the community for the night.  One of the host brothers looked up at the sky and was like...it will rain at 4.  Needles to say...it did.  Amazing eh?

I made it out to three communities this week which was great! Its always nice to visit the volunteers and see how they are doing.  The reaction i get when I show up is pretty hillarious.  Their initial reaction is "shit what did I do?? why is the director visiting me?" then they figure out im just there to visit and see what they have been up to they get really excited.  So far all the volunteers have been doing great! No major illness or anything of that nature.  Alot of down time for them, but thats how it goes in Latin America.  Most communities will be buying materials for the projects this comming week so things will be picking up.  They also only have three more weeks in community.  It goes SO FAST!

We had an all american BBQ for fourth of July.  I went to our favorite bakery and asked them to make us a chocolate cake with USA in red white and blue.  They gave me the most hillarious looks, but were happy to do it.   When i picked it up the next day i got some funny stares walking through Juigalpa with a big USA cake.  But for once...the cake was delicious.  Usually the frosting taste like toothpaste or something of that nature, but this one was actually really good all around.

We lost water for about a week here.  it apparently came during the night but we werent awake to turn it on to fill up our pila, so we were struggling! thank god it came on saturday, the day that all the supervisors got back from being on route and ready to bathe.  We are now gonna be checking out water alot so we dont miss it again!

Im planning on visit a few more communities this week, but this comming weekend we have our encuentro comming up which is gonna take alot of planning.  We are bringing in community members and together we are gonna work towards improving the projects and program for the following year.  Lots of work to be done and not alot of time left to do it!

Turning on the Water
Leah,

Very interesting report. What is the deal with the water? Is it pumped to a storage facility and then turned on every now and then, or does it run through an aquaduct only when it rains or what?

Looking forward to seeing you in August.

Love, Uncle Rick
