The idea of this adventure has been in thoughts and dreams for a while. Both Joe and I have wanted to travel and see more of the land in Central America and through two years of discussions the form it is taking is to buy a cheap old pick up truck and drive around for some time.  We discussed bikes, buses, horses, but in the end this is the way we are going to be moving.

La Monja was born the day after we finished the Peace Corps.  We had connections with a guy who was selling a fairly good deal and he was a trusted mechanic.  We got her in a town called Las Monjas, Jalapa.  So we decided to call her La Monja – the nun.  Then we put a sticker of the Virgin Mary on the back to have blend in with all the other cars in Guatemala.

The first thing we did was set out to get the paperwork to make the car legal ours to drive through country borders.  It was a long process involving going back and forth between a couple offices, getting stamps, getting signatures, collecting more papers, paying fees, and waiting.  But at the end we of an eight hour day we got the title to the car and we drove off.

Next we moved Joe's house into the truck.  Drove to Santiago and moved my house into the truck.  Then we did a big loop around Guatemala visiting friends and seeing some of the places that we can't visit during the rainy season and then drive south.  We hope that La Monja will make it to Panama and back to the United States.  Our timeline is undefined and we are open to anything that comes along in that time.

The photos here of our the first bit of time we have spent driving through Guatemala.
