Told Lawire I want to move to San Fran .I LOVE San Francisco. Only two drawbacks for the traveller are that it's a little bit difficult to find a place to have a healthy breakfast, and that the coffee isn't so great. The people though are lovely, and the city itself is miraculously clean- the streets are literally steam cleaned every night !!
After waking up, we walked back to Fishermans Wharf and after paying $16 for the "Audio Tour" caught the ferry to Alkatraz. Recommend for anyone visiting Alkatraz to pay that little bit extra to take the Audio Tour- well worth it. It's basically a head set that gives you a running commentary on what you are seeing as you walk through the grounds, but since you can stop and start it, it has the advantage over a guided tour in that you can stop and linger in any one spot as long as you want.
After we got back to the main land, we headed back in to town through the non-tourist part of China Town which is VASTLY different to the touristy part of China Town. Far more interesting. Every second shop was a fantastic grocery store.
Leave San Fran tomorrow. Have met many friendly people here. Very clean city, and very welcoming. There are lots of beggars ("pan handlers" they are called here) though. We were told that they flock to San Fran from all over because it's a very friendly place, and they are far more likely to be given money by people in the street. If you are travelling to here, keep in mind that agressive pan handling (being harassed) has actually been made illegal. It's only been a few times where we had beggars following us up the street demanding money, though.
