You know that sinking feeling when you're zooming to the airport in a taxi at 4am and suddenly you're being passed by vehicles with sirens and lights going...and then you see the smoke and fire...just as you see the barrier over the entrance to the airport...no, you don't know that sinking feeling because you weren't in the taxi this morning.

Our driver was directed to an area furthest away from the smoke and fire and we were let out to walk a short distance to the terminal with a few others that were there to take the first flight of the day. No explanation since we spoke no Vietnamese. An uneasy feeling creeps over us.

We enter the terminal and check in. We ask what's going on and the United clerk looks uncomfortable and says there's a fire. No shit. (Hey, it's early.)

But, our flight will depart on time, apparently.

Once on board, the pilot says there was a fire in the domestic terminal and admin offices and we had a slight delay since all the proper paperwork was in the process of burning up.

Glad I didn't let my imagination wander too much...but it was definitely a scary moment.

So as my relief washes over me, the pilot says our 2 hour layover in Hong Kong has been extended to 4 hours due to 'a delay'. Argh. So, here we sit....looking at the ghosts of HK's mountains and high rises through the 'mist' (that means smog in other countries) and hoping to get home sometime before the end of the 'day'.

Wish us luck!
