Where I stayed
Well, Louisville was supposed to be a brief stop over to prevent us from driving 10 consecutive hours, but let's be honest: Louisville is an awesome town. We got a super deal on Priceline and stayed at the four star Galt House Hotel and Suites in the downtown district. This is the fourth installment of the Galt House; the original was the residence of Dr. Galt in the early 1800's. He built an actual hotel in 1835 that was visited and praised by Charles Dickens, Jefferson Davis and 3 presidents. According to my informational magazine in the hotel (the one I'm reading in the photo...) army guys Sherman and Grant plotted a battle together in the hotel. That hotel burned to the ground and was replaced in 1869, only to be torn down in 1921. Al J. Schneider built the hotel that stands today in 1972 and named it after Dr. Galt.
After a quick coffee stop this morning, we walked around the downtown and happened upon the Art Car Weekend, an awesome display of crazy painted cars with things glued on them that lasted a good four blocks. Among my personal favorites were the dental car, the Wizard of Oz car, and the penny studded Caddy.
We then ventured over to the "hip side of town" and visited Lynn's Paradise Cafe. A busy destination spot, to be sure, but Lynn's was well worth the wait. It's tacky and eclectic and the wait staff are Kentucky's finest punk hippy kids--in short: awesome with veggie options. I had the vegetarian biscuits and gravy and my first ever plate of fried green tomatoes.
