I had a leisurely drive up the M6 towards Scotland. I stopped at Tebay Services for an organic and fair-trade cup of tea. Although I did not need any groceries, I spent a few minutes browsing around the impressive farm shop. I was going to stop for lunch at Carlisle but it took 30 minutes to drive into the city from the motorway (a football match was on) and I could not find a central parking space so I went back to the M6 and stopped at a service station on the M74 shortly after entering Scotland.
The drive from there to New Lanark was picturesque and trouble free. I had my first cup of coffee and a slice of tea cake (fruit cake to me) in Mill 3 at New Lanark. The food is home cooked and is excellent value for money.
I then set off on a 6½ mile walk from New Lanark. It was a lovely sunny day and the walk took me along the River Clyde pass the three waterfalls that make up the Falls of Clyde, the Art Deco Bonnington Power Station and the remains of Corra Castle. It took about 3 hours with plenty of stops to admire the views.
I was pretty tired afterwards so spent the evening in the Youth Hostel chatting to fellow travellers and reading my newspaper.
