Day 42

Tokoriki to Auckland

Last day on the island and it's another glorious one. Which we are leaving.

We missed dinner last night as it was another buffet so instead went back and watched a film and concocted a new bug plan. After the slightly failed bedspread over the top attempt I took the mossy nets and instead of letting them hang down and close us in I draped them over the top of the frame to make a ceiling. The fan just about blew through the nets so it was not too hot. Success - no bugs dropping from the ceiling and Tina slept. Fail - it was on the last night!

Anyway we were up early so had an early breakfast and were treated with a song from the boys – happy birthday and happy anniversary which sort of both happen on the trip, plus a cake. Apparently it was planned for the previous night but we didn’t show up for dinner. Oops. We then sat in the lounge area with our new friends, David & Verity, who live in Wellington so we are catching up with them on Wednesday. They have family in Kingston so know the UK well.

The boys sang us our goodbye from Tokoriki song and then into the helicopter and off and back to the main island to catch the plane. We bought an upgrade as it was cheap but it was not a very good one but ok. Their airport lounge was almost empty but we got some tea and a bit of internet time to upload a bit. The plane was a bit delayed but a short 3hrs then we arrived in Auckland on the North Island. It was a bit dark as we flew in so pix are limited to sky shots from the plane…. We’re hoping some might blow up and be our orange 'art’ for the living room.

Auckland airport is very modern, like Sydney, and all very straightforward. Another stamp in the passport and plenty of people saying good things about NZ’s football scores, they all seem amazed.

The driver who took us to the airport turned out to have lived in Isleworth & Twickenham for 16 years. You travel halfway round the world and almost meet your neighbours. Weird. Anyway we got some helpful info on the city and some tips so that was good.

The apartment here is nice, well laid out and best of all nice, straight, square, white walls with NO bugs. Ha ha. Actually it wasn’t that bad, the roaches were tiny and the spiders like UK house spiders it’s just the ceiling was dark and high so they must have lost their footing. Strange though all the ones that fell hit Tina. Bite count at the end was 14 to Tina and 6 to me so not drastic.

So on with the washing, upload the blog, do the receipts, catch up on emails and bed. A bit worried though, we seem to be near a train track : - )

Safe, sound and a bit tired
