Day 21

San Francisco

We had a latish night yesterday as the cable cars run to 12:30am and rattle by outside the window shaking the building a little. Very atmospheric. So we watched a movie, Hilary Duff rom com, to keep us awake and Tina took a whole Nytol and stuffed her ears with plugs. Seemed to work!

In the morning we managed to skype Vic & Matt which was nice and after a bit of faffing about we got sorted and decided to walk to the crookedest road. Very odd, 8 turns down a steep one block intersection. We also walked up the steepest grade road, about 31 degrees so they say. After this we headed downtown through Chinatown – which was busy, apparently the biggest Chinatown outside China, on in the US – one or the other. We made our way down to Union Square and on Sue C's recommendation headed up to the Cheesecake Factory on top of Macys. Thanks Sue, it was very nice up there.

We also saw a sun halo which was almost perfect but my poor camera couldn’t do it justice. I was sitting under a turned off patio heater and managed to catch part of the circle. According to good old Wikipedia these are 22 degree halos which is light diffracted through hexagonal ice crystals often in cirrus clouds. So now we know.

The city was much less crowded (except in Chinatown) so it was nice to walk. We took the sightseeing bus after our Macy lunch for an hour or so which was pretty good but cold as the fog started to come down. You were right Barb, it certainly did roll in! As we headed over the Golden Gate Bridge it got heavier and colder but on the other side it was clear. Very strange.

We headed back through other districts and the biggest park in the US the Presido, even bigger than central park. But we drove through it as it was a bit cold. We’re back in the apartment and after a bit of re-planning the San Francisco to Los Angeles route we’re settling down to watch another rom com…

Tomorrow off to Alcatraz.

Thanks for your comments. Mums & Jacqui – we found the people, they are all in Yosemite park and San Francisco! Ivy, yes real tea at last, with a teabag and skimmed (sorry low-fat) milk. Barb, the bag lady is not staying – just posing for a picture. Actually we have new bags today from Safeway and what’s wrong with frog’s legs!

Safe, sound & fogged out

Mark & Tina
