Day 19

Three Rivers to Yosemite

The Three Rivers comfort Inn was not too bad after all. A good sleep which is the main thing. Breakfast was disappointing though. TV was not much cop, the tube must have been going because everyone either had an excessive spray tan or had just been tango'd. Still can’t figure the prices, this was a similar price to the Salt Lake Hilton, the Stovepipe Village and Las Vegas – all with hugely varying quality.

We took the 'quick’ route on major roads for the first two hours after our long day yesterday. Gassed up along the way with the famous bug removal exercise. California seems much more ‘finished’, I guess because it is probably more wealthy generally. Someone came up to me in the gas station and asked if I could help her with some petrol as her van had run out and she needed to get back to LA. I wasn’t sure if it was a scam but it was only $5 worth and she had a friendly dog – reckoned that no-one had helped her so far. Probably a scam, never mind. We headed north keeping the sierras on our right then headed east towards the mountains, again. Just when you start thinking seen one mountain seen them all, another magnificent view takes your breath away.  The photos really don’t do them justice. All the Yosemite routes on the south and west were open and clear so it was probably a good call yesterday albeit a long way. Tina thought the Sierra Nevadas were in Spain but here they are, and we are near Nevada. We reckoned ‘sierra’ is probably Spanish for mountain and so it is – Sierra Nevada is a Spanish phrase for snowy mountain range. There are probably loads. En-route we tried a new savoury snack. What rebels. Beef Jerky. But it wasn’t all that good, we probably picked the wrong one as it had some sort of teriyaki sauce rather than just beef.

We headed to the park which is spectacular. Where Yellowstone was an unusual mix of geological formations, Yosemite is dramatic cliffs, lush tree lined snow capped mountains, clear blue skies and air, and big waterfalls. We drove by a river with loads of rapids and white water which was very beautiful and headed upwards. Again! Nice roads though not too taxing for poor old Kia. We ticked off 3,000 miles in her today.

We stopped off for lunch by the river (where we made hello messages to the kids) and sat for a while in the peace. We stopped off at cascade falls and I clambered up the rocks a bit. Just as we were saying that Memorial Weekend, (it’s like a bank holiday weekend), didn’t seem too crowded we hit the second of the major waterfalls, Bridalveil Falls and suddenly there were masses of people and loads of cars. The falls were really nice, odd because the spray was hanging in the air so it appeared to be permanently raining. These falls were the ones recreated in the second room at the Anniversary Inn in Salt Lake.

From this point until we got round Yosemite Village (didn’t stop) there was a slow traffic jam and crowds everywhere, just like Richmond Park or Brighton on a Sunday. We’ve driven 3,000 miles visiting national parks for three weeks and there were more people in the 2 mile stretch of Yosemite than all the rest put together! Maybe it was the holiday or the weather. Still the slow drive gave us time to see things leisurely.

After an hour or so the traffic thinned out and we carried on through one of the western entry roads to our hotel. Just had a lovely tea and in an excellent and very pleasant room for the night. This one is worth the money! Off to San Francisco tomorrow.

Safe, sound, and crowded out!
