Day 4
Leaving Rapid City for Buffalo
Getting up, Getting on & Getting out
Better sleep finally, nice hotel & very comfortable if a bit tired and old. Staff excellent and all very helpful and friendly. The new home btw is not a camper, just an SUV! Spoke to Meg on Skype this morning (her afternoon) which was excellent. Mobile reception is rubbish it seems so we keep cutting out, expecting lots of missed calls when we finally find a cell.
Heading for Buffalo today, maybe catch some things on the way. Weather is looking ok so far, the best it's been for weeks apparently. We are hoping that the planned road opening for Yellowstone Park is on time – otherwise we have a very long drive around the south of it – like maybe 20 hours, not good. Road is planned to open today so fingers crossed. Just going to breakfast then offski. We have become weather channel addicts lately. John would love it, 24/7 and always something going on.
Holiday Inn at Rapid was pretty good, sleep not too bad so ready to rock and roll. First big driving day today, about 240 miles so interesting to see how that goes. Stopped off along route and discovered in the local Verizon shop that Orange doesn’t work in Wyoming or Idaho, but might be ok by the time we get to California, option to buy a phone for a week but at $100 seems a bad plan. Bought a starbucks card and joined their free wifi program, seems easier and skyping texts is a lot cheaper anyway.
Made a short detour to the petrified woods, really interesting to see wood that has been turned to stone. Watched a short film explaining the process and then did a walking tour of the woods, really pretty and we had it all to ourselves. Peace at last!!!
One long straight road, with a vast change of scenery along the way. An inbreds picture for you Meg xx Glad we didn’t break down here lol.
Mountains are breathtaking, and we arrived in Buffalo safe & sound. Holiday inn pictures on the net are not quite what you get when you arrive but inside is great, comfy beds, pillows and very quiet even though it’s on the main road. Looking forward to a good night sleep. We went to dinner at the Occidental Hotel which has been around since 1880 apparently and has had people like Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid, Buffalo Bill & Calamity Jane stay there. Not convinced as it has been totally rebuilt since then but the concept is real. Very quaint (old). We had the Bison special.
Tomorrow we are off to Cody which is Buffalo Bill country. But for now we are going to watch a film.
