New York City

Slept early last night, time difference got the better of us, so awake quite early this morning. Weather raining and really cold with low cloud and fog, pretty grim. Decided against the gym at 5am which was an option. Instead we took an early breakfast about 6am and caught up on emails, mainly Tina's daily spam. Meg has made a journal for us to read which is nice but we struggled to post a comment back for a while until Tina subscribed as a live journal user. Shower was good this morning, bathroom rates pretty well as free from mould!

Decided to get off early so went for a cab at 8:30. The transportation manager gave us the hotel car which turned out to be pretty expensive at 48 dollars plus a tip. Driver was a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Sly and came originally from Naples in Italy so we had a good chat. After getting to the Newark Liberty Park we picked up the ferry – the Manhatten skyline was basically a fog bank sadly so rubbish pictures. Ellis Island was interesting, good audio tour, then back to the ferry for the Statue of Liberty tour. We forgot the headphones but did climb the 354 steps to the crown after a minor expedition through security again and a new age locker system. We had already been through airline type security once, if this is for every visit we need to add 2 hours to the tour! Note to Jen: even back then they fined the carriers, $100 for every immigrant without the right papers to discourage the ship owners – you could have had a job with them!

Up in the crown we had a good view but there is no restaurant up there disappointingly. In fact it’s a tiny room about 10 feet wide after many narrow steps. Off back to the ferry via a tea stop and into Battery Park at the south end of Manhatten.

Headed for the site of 9/11 and took a walking tour looking at the museum and hearing from a couple of locals who were there and volunteered now on these tours so people would remember. An interesting tour and brought back memories from 2001 when we watched it unfold in the news.

We decided to walk so headed north which took a couple of hours stopping off for lunch/dinner in the Silver Spur – nice steak. Special pic for Meg & Sam of the bus in baby gap!

Finally made it to Penn Central and took the 7:42 to south Amboy, wherever that is, and got off at the airport, airtrain to P4 and courtesy bus to the hotel – mission!

Lots of expense today. Breakfast $36, Cab $53, Ferry & tours $46, Lunch $40, Walking Tour $30, Train home $30 etc etc. Decided to give the Metropolitan Museum a miss this time.

Have an early start tomorrow as we leave at 7.40 to move on to Rapid City via Denver.  Been upgraded to first though so will be interesting to see what the difference is.

Off to bed now safe, sound & shattered xxx
