Mark:

Taxi at 7am, that was a mistake! He must have used every back street from home to Heathrow, Tina was green by the time we got to the A3. We got there eventually at about 8:20 so in good time. Check in was simple and very organised having on-line check in and fast track security is a bonus. Managed to pack down to 23kg and 19kg so a bit of scope.

Found the airport lounge. Very nice. Good breakfast array so we sat in there for an hour or so then off to A10. Seems like terminal 5 is not finished as we took a bus to the plane which seemed to take a while. Plane was a new 777 and about half full - we had a double pod in the centre of business. Comfortable and full lay flat seats. Fed all day so no need for dinner tonight. Iceland volcano still causing problems so we had a one hour delay on the tarmac and then a re-routing over Iceland bizarrely to avoid the ash so that added another hour. Tina was worried about 'going backwards' but it was fine. Watched three films, the Ian Dury biopic was very good – I liked him in the 70s and the actor was excellent. Book of Eli was good too.

Arrived at Newark airport, security was efficient but a bit slow. Friendly border control though and pretty simple. Got a transit ‘air train’ to another part of the airport then the courtesy bus to the hotel. Room is ok, bed is huge and comfortable we hope. We were heading into Manhatten today but we lost a few hours and it’s 10pm UK time so we are just going to get an early night. Have loads to get to tomorrow. Meg is ok, had a little chat – Vic also went away today to Makadi in Egypt and had a 5 hours delay, not good. But arrived safe.

Tina:

Day 1 of our 74 day trip has arrived and even though we have been planning for months it has come around so quickly that it almost took us by surprise. Saying goodbye to the girls was a wrench but I’m sure they will be fine without us.  (Love you both loads).  And we will be back before they know it.

Love business class it’s great and worth every penny of our ticket so far.  Service and food fab and on a long flight made such a difference, only wish we could do it every holiday. Underestimated how tired we would be so looking forward to sleeping tonight.  (Room is like the Celtic Manor Megs!!).

Looking forward to Statue of Liberty, 911 Tour, Metropolitan Museum and Skytrain tomorrow.  Weather not going to be great only 54 with possible snow!!! Oh dear we didn’t bring coats lol.

Anyway we are off to bed tired and happy!!!
