We arrived in Midland today on our way home.  Opted to stop here for two reasons:  Van Horn is too long a drive in one day for us AND we found another BBQ joint in our book to check out - surprise, surprise.

After getting set up in near 100 degree heat, we head off to Sam's Bar-B-Que just north of downtown Midland.  It is mid-afternoon when we arrive, so it was understandable why there was hardly anyone in the place.  While we were eating several other customers did come in.  We both ordered the combo plate based on the waitress' recommendation.  The price was reasonable and the portions were large.  The heavily spiced sausage was good and the beans were good.  The brisket was dry and tough even with a sauce poured on it.  The suace was good however.  The chicken was ok, and the ribs, were not like we like them where the meat falls off the bone.  Overall, we've "been there and done that", but will not go back.

While there we noted that there were very few non-long term slots in the park.  Then, as we drove on through the Midland - Odessa area, the parking lots at the businesses were full, lots of activity going on, an old RV park that is normally a ghost town was overflowing with rigs. We were told that they are "suffering" through a 4% unemployment rate.  The oilfields are active with pulling units and drilling rigs - a very good sight to see!

Next stop - Van Horn.
