Sam and I just arrived back to Jiangda from our two and a half week tour of Western China.

From the taxi ride to the airport in Urumqi this morning to arriving at our building in Zhenjiang tonight, our journey took a total of eleven hours, even though our total flying time was only about four hours.  Everything went smoothly, though.  It's just that traveling involves a lot of waiting around for planes, buses, et cetera to board and depart.

The only slight snag in our plans was that the travel agency we used to book our flight from Urumqi to Nanjing didn't tell us that we'd be connecting in Xi'an.  The connection added a couple of hours to our trip.  But overall, we traveled a huge distance in relative swiftness and ease.

When I've flown from the west to the east in the US, it's always felt strange to go to bed an entire country away from where I woke up.  The journey Sam and I made today is equivalent to starting out in Washington state, or maybe even Alaska, and ending up in South Carolina.  It's a huge geographical and cultural distance to cover in one day.

But enough about geography.  As I mentioned yesterday, today was Sam's birthday and even though we traveled all day, I think he had a decent one.  I was finally able to give him the gifts I bought three months ago.  I got him two pieces of art - one was a traditional Chinese painting he liked the first time we went to the Moganshan Lu art district in Shanghai, and the second was a black and white photo of the Bund from the 1930s.

We have three days left in China and we'll spend them running errands, packing, and enjoying meals together a few more times.  I don't mean to be maudlin, but the tears are going to come soon.
