Last night we all went to the new Spanish restaurant again and to the nearby bar afterward.  We sat outside on the patio and about an hour into our visit, a somewhat deranged-looking man walked up and started spewing a whole lot of hysterical nonsense.  Sam and I played along.

The man first said, in decent but imperfect English, "I believe in aliens UFO."  Sam and I nodded enthusiastically and said "Yep, great."  The man then pointed to the sky and said, "You see, up there?"  When Sam and I didn't immediately react, the man said again, with more force, "You see, up there?!"  Sam and I looked up and agreed that aliens were up there.

Next our friend deadpanned, "ET."  He didn't follow up "ET" with anything.  He just said, "ET."  At the same time, Sam and I held up our index fingers and said "phone home."  The man looked mystified.  Again, Sam and I held up our fingers and said "ET phone home!"  Our friend was either confused or had become disinterested.  He switched to politics.

He asked us if we were from the US, and Charles told him that we were from the US and England.  At this point, Mike had had enough and got up to join Robert inside.

The rest of us continued our conversation.  Our friend said, "you like China?"  Sam and I dutifully nodded and said "Yes, we love it."  The man gave a thumbs-up and said, "China like this."  We agreed.  Still giving a thumbs-up, he said "Meiguo (America) like this."  We agreed again.  Then, the man turned his hand over to give a thumbs-down and said, "Japan like this."  We laughed.

Next came another deadpan - our friend said "chimpan-jay."  It took me a minute to catch on, but I said, "Do you mean chimpanzee?"  The man said yes.  Then he said "Zhenjiang zoo."  I said, "Zhenjiang doesn't have a zoo."  He responded with "Nanjing zoo," and I said "yes, Nanjing has a zoo."  Again, the man said "chimpan-jay."  We repeated after him, "chimpan-jay!"  But he said nothing.

After a moment of awkward silence, the man started over with, "I believe in aliens UFO."  Sam and I said "Yep, so do we."

Though our friend was still a sight to behold and could have continued forever, we were getting a little bored so I said "Okay, zaijian (goodbye)," hoping I could trick the man into leaving.  Amazingly, my plan worked and the man said zaijian back to us, then walked away.
