Charles didn't get the teaching job he'd had his heart set on in Izmir, Turkey.  I was worried about him when he emailed me this morning to let me know and told him I'd love to have dinner with him or just a glass of wine in his room if that was all he was up for.

But Charles emailed me back to say he'd love to have dinner, and when we met up this evening, he wasn't as heartbroken as I'd thought.  We had a delicious dinner of twice cooked pork, Sichuan chicken, vegetable and egg soup, and rice at a new restaurant at the front gate.

Afterward, we stopped at a pastry shop and bought a small cake, which we had with dessert wine in Charles's room.  We chatted about all the enticing places Charles has read about in Qingdao.  We can't wait for our trip on Friday evening.

Earlier today, Arwen and I had a coffee date at Bread Talk downtown, and she really liked it.  She was afraid she wouldn't be able to get baked goods in China and savored the apple and cheese danish she selected from the pastry cases.  China is lousy with bakeries, and there are more cakes and pastries here than I've seen anywhere else.
