My mom now has her new puppy.  It took an eight hour round trip drive and two trips to Petsmart, but she's now the proud owner of a black and white, nameless Shih Tzu, who, I have to admit, is pretty cute.

In other good news, Sam and I have decided on a place to go next week during our last few days of break.  We're going to Shanghai for a day to check out a couple of art galleries, shop, have a nice meal, and stay in a place that has a real bathroom.

The next day, we plan to take a one hour bus ride to the small town of Zhouzhang, which is halfway between Shanghai and Suzhou and features quaint rivers and canals and several intact historical landmarks.

I didn't do much today.  I read the news, shopped at my favorite online stores, which, if anyone's interested, are Gap, J. Crew, Boden, and Zappos.  I also read for a little while.  I've just read 1984, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Animal Farm, and now I'm reading Brave New World.

I didn't plan on disclosing any of that information because I'm highly embarrassed about not having read these books until now, but oh well.  Lots of books and little time and whatnot.  So far, Brave New World is my favorite, though Huxley's prose isn't as clear and uncluttered as Orwell's or Kundera's.

I took honors and AP English in high school and for some reason, 1984 and Brave New World were parts of the curricula of only the regular English classes.  Brave New World was on my night stand when hurricane Katrina came to New Orleans after my senior year of high school.  I didn't buy another copy until about a week ago at a foreign language bookstore in Beijing.

But enough about that.  Sam and I think the new teachers from America whom I've talked with via email have arrived, but I haven't seen them in the hall and I don't know which room is theirs, so I haven't met them yet.  Tomorrow, Sam and I are going to lunch at Mandy's house.  It will be our first visit to a Chinese home.
