One of my favorite writers in Anne Lamott.  She writes of religion and faith but with a twist.  She describes herself as "spiritual in my way, which is to say, devout, with a sometimes bad attitude, a black sense of humor, and some naughty tendencies".  This quote really hit home for me as, I feel a bond with God ,but I still need to not take it all so seriously and realize I'm flawed and it is okay.   It's okay to have a grumpy day, do a bit of complaining, pull the covers over your head and eat chip dip!  But you need to pick yourself up, have a laugh, and get on with life (or it will get on without you).

Many people have asked me "why Haiti".  It's sometimes hard to answer.  It is not crystal clear like mayo or Miracle Whip (mayo), hamburger or hotdog (hamburger), Coke or Pepsi (Coke-Diet!).  To me it is a golden opportunity to take an entire week, without interruptions, and make a difference.  I can do things there that I could not do here in such a short period of time.  I think anyone who has children knows that they are constantly calling and tugging at you.  It will be nice to put meals, laundry, and cleaning out of my mind and focus on the needs of some truly helpless individuals.  I hope it invigorates and inspires me to come back and do more locally to help people.  I hope my children will be inspired to help others, realize how fortunate they are, and maybe someday do the same. I know already that it will cement the knowledge that I am truly blessed.  Of course, with the group I will be with, there will be laughter.  That is always a beautiful thing!  So when people say "why Haiti", I guess I should answer laughter, insight, courage, and most of all ... grace.
