There is plenty to do there, but it is honestly just a family-oriented (as opposed to Myrtle Beach) beach town in South Carolina, with all the typical trimmings - i.e. numerous mini-golf courses, seafood restaurants, bike rental shops, etc. We always stayed at condos in Shipyard, one of the 15-or-so plantations on the island which all have various residential establishments and a stretch of sandy beach to their credit. Ironically, even though I love going down to the beach, I'm not a big ocean person, and would prefer to walk/lay on the beach and swim at the hotel/condo pool.
Some of my favorite experiences at Hilton Head involve riding rented bikes along the beach all the way from Shipyard to the tip of the shoe-shaped island to the Salty Dog Cafe (made famous by its shirts which I see everywhere). I also loved Pirates' Island mini-golf course, the best themed course on the island, as well as exploring the shops of Coligny Plaza. Not to mention the Outlet Malls just off the island - which are a great way to spend a night.
