Well this summer has been very hectic. Among the events have been a few 'China days'. One of which has been a reminder to me that I am still in a developing Country. I, being the ditz that I am, left my bank card in an ATM. Now anywhere else in the world the card would have been swallowed whole within thirty seconds, but not in China. After 27 minutes the next customer walked up to the ATM and wiped me out. Call it a live and learn mistake. Now I know to be more diligent about my cards, wallet and Id. Like my mother so kindly said "at least I was not thrown into a Chinese prison or worse"! That China day and many others have added up to a hot and trying summer.
Still, Connor and I have taken one vacation to the most beautiful place that I have seen yet. Moganshan is an old town where westerners used to vacation (before the communist revolution) to get out of Shanghai. We stayed at the most fantastic retreat that caters mostly to westerners. We spent the days hiking through bamboo forests and up beautiful mountains. It was all very remote and the retreat was made out of old, previously abandoned, cottages which we had to hike to. We stayed at the highest one and had a beautiful view of the mountain ranges. Of course I must mention the food that was cooked by an 'a-yi' (which means Aunt in Chinese - it is a polite term for the maid). She came to our cottage and cooked us a beautiful Chinese dinner and also a western breakfast the next morning. The breakfast included homemade bread which was a huge hit! All in all it was the perfect retreat; minus the bug bites that I recieved. My students tell me that my blood is sweet...
