To start the Santa Cruz trek we took a ride from Huaraz to Caraz, about 2 and a half hour drive, and started the trek.  You could take a guide but we opted not to, which we came to regret when we saw graffiti of the Shining Path around.  The Santa Cruz trek is a beautiful, fun, and not very diffcult 4 day trek in nature with impressive views of mountains, prairies and valleys.

The first day we climbed from 2,900 to 3,600 meters in about five or six hours, and camped outside a small village.  By this time we were a bit freaked out by spending a long time in Peru and constantly watching over you shoulder.  We set up four tents across from one another, and were a bit surprised when someone walked in between in the middle of the night.  I hopped out of the tent yelling, might not have been the right thing to do, but you never know.

We continued on the second day, seeing beautiful vistas and seeing some locals.  The second day was a bit easier then the first, pretty much flat, but climbing up to 4,100 meters towards the end.

The third day we kept climbing to 4,750 meters and going down the valley, it because a bit more humid and the vegetation changed.  There were plenty of Quenual trees, which is amazing that they even grow at such a high altitude.

The fourth day was short but the most difficult.  We had to climb up a steep hill to get to the road, and wait for a taxi to take us back to Huaraz.

Overall:
Stunning trek
Not very difficult
Well worth it.
