We took a bus from Rio to the Iguazu falls on our way to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The bus was OK, it was a our first long ride, the bust was clean and made several pit stops for food or clean toilets. Since we didn't understand Portuguese we made sure we hung around the bus not to get stuck somewhere. The only drawback was that it was at night and we didn't get to see the landscape.
The falls are absolutely magnificent, I won't waste anytime trying to describe them, take a look at the pictures.

We walked around the Brazilian side for several hours taking it all in, feeding the little animals that hang out there, having some food and deciding what our next step should be.

We crossed over to Argentina, and decided to save money by hitchhiking to Buenos Aires.  Well... that lasted about five minutes, and since we missed the express bus, we had to take the slow one (14 hours).
Even though a 14 hour bus drive sounds as good as a nail in the head, I would recommend it.  You stop at Argentinean towns you didn't even know existed, where gauchos roam the dusty streets, little houses are arranged in rows and the only paved road is the one the bus is on.
Something out of a Clint Eastwood movie.
Most of the time the best, and most memorable side trips in your journey are unplanned, go with it and enjoy what others missed.
Overall:
Don't miss the falls if you're in the area (even if you're not).
