We have had several busy weeks and keep working on our new house full force, but even we need a break.  We knew we wanted to go somewhere, but didn't know where so after scouring the Internet for a few moments we ruled out everything south of us.  Since it was a beautiful summer day we knew half the state would be heading to the shore; we also knew that we didn't want to get stuck in traffic coming back.

We decided to go to the Red Mill Museum Village in Clinton, NJ and we weren't disappointed.   The town is right off of Rt. 78 and we found a parking spot immediately next to the museum on the bank of the Raritan River.  The picture of the mill across the river is very scenic and we kept snapping pictures as we walked across the bridge.  There is a small park next to the mill which we sat and watched the snapping turtles, geese & fishermen, as well as hearing the huge waterwheel turning

The mill itself is very interesting, $8 per adult to get in and walk around in a self-guided tour.  The gears & pulleys that the enormous waterwheel turns are still operational, which is absolutely fascinating.  Some of the old buildings in the mill are still up, like the offices, kiln quarry and more.  We walked around several other buildings to see how people not so lived long ago, one room hut for a whole family or a single person and even a depressing schoolroom.

Afterwards we went to eat at The Old Riverhouse, sat right next to the river and had - bar none - the best veggie burger we have ever eaten.  After lunch / dinner we walked around Main St., a quaint little street which reminded us of a small New Hope, with many shops and curiosities - of course what picked my interest was JJ Scoops - an ice cream store.
