After talking to a few people and some excellent suggestions from Fodor's website users we found out that we will be SOL driving in the afternoon from Mt. Vernon to Yorktown, so we decided to stay our first night there.

We found a close by hotel, Best Western, three miles from Mt. Vernon. We changed our reservation with the VA Dept. of Tourism (very easy and no hassle) and made an on-line reservations at the Best Western.
