We have wanted to go visit Virginia since we got married.  I'm a history buff and Cheri loves gardens - a perfect vacation; however there was always something which pulled us in another direction: deals, promotions, weather - whatever, bottom line is we never went.

This year we weren't planning on going either, we actually wanted to take a vacation in September but in a moment of insanity we signed up our daughter for pre-school starting in ... you guessed it .... September!
In the middle of July we found ourselves trying to find rooms in Dutch Country, PA to no avail, the whole county is booked.  Good, who wants to go there anyway when every family from the Northeast is going to be there.

Suddenly, a bright idea struck: Virginia in August.
We have been signed up for the Virginia Dept. of Tourism e-mail for about three years, and we found it full of discounts, this year was no different: stay 4 nights gets the fifth night free, how could we go wrong.

When we called up (the Dept. gives you an 800 number to call for the promotion & they book the room) the hotel we wanted to stay in wasn't part of the promotion, but the prices for hotel rooms in the state are not very expensive so we splurged on the Duke of York hotel, right on the York River (who knew there was a York River?).

Since our weekends in August seemed to be booked for some reason (bad planning) we are going Monday to Friday.

We are planning to drive half way to Williamsburg on Monday, stop at Mt. Vernon for a few hours and then continue to the hotel - we figure that would split up the trip nicely.
