Stanley is a very small port city on this British overseas territory. Approximately 3000 people live in the Falkland islands, and 2000 of those live in Stanley. There are two little hotels, several little restaurants, pubs, and a store or two. There is even one gas station, oops, I mean Petrol station. The island gets a substantial amount of revenue from fishery royalties, sheep, and tourism, and somehow that translates in a fair amount of subsidized living. They pay nothing for health care, education (through college), and drastically reduced prices on fuel and other commodities. It is a very English community, and in keeping with that, I had fish and chips for lunch! These islands are so remote, yet they have good internet connections, telephone and TV, and know what the rest of the world is up to. There is even a little cinema playing current release movies. And there is an overnight courier service from England. But it is still so remote, to actually go anywhere is very expensive, and for someone to come here, the same. Too small and remote for me.... Ok to visit, but I think I'll move on.
