Ica is blindingly hot. Zoe and I are now waiting to get on our next to bus to Arequipa after three sun and sand drenched days in the desert. Ica was said to be quite a depressing place to stay so we took a cheap mototaxi ride 5 minutes out of town to the much more fun, backpacker filled place of Huacachina. The scenery is just superb. Lining the streets are sand dunes towering over and in Huacachina itself is a natural oasis and around it the main hubbub of the little town. We were so happy to see a big pool that looked very inviting as we came out dripping from the taxi! It is seriously warm here.
On the first night we took full advantage of the all you can eat/drink barbeque and suffered from it the next day, thus postponing our sand buggying trip until the following day. The national drink of pisco sour is dangerous. So we spent that day soaking in the sunshine and beautiful scenery. Unfortunately I fear I have a stomach bug which have made things a little uncomfortable but things have been ok today - thank gawd.

On our second day we spent the morning sun worshipping and then jumped into what looked like a space buggy for our afternoon riding the sand dunes. It was absolutely nuts - the crazy Peruvian driving our buggy was going at perilious speeds up and down the steepest of sand dunes, much to our delight and screaming! It honestly felt like a rollercoaster and thinking about it now, a little scary that our lives were in his hands but we all absolutely loved it. We took occasional stops at the top of the biggest dunes to try out sand boarding. After waxing the bottom of the board to make it go quicker, we made the decision of standing or lying on our tummies to go down. Of course after stupid me chooses to stand up on first attempt and didnt exactly go very quickly downhill - more like backwards, I learnt that throwing myself headfirst was much more successful. The most amusing moments of the afternoon were spent watching a typical Latin man trying to stand up on his board at every opportunity and never ever succeeding....he would roll and grunt his whole way down and it all just looked very painful for him! The worst was watching him attempt the last dune which was absolutely huge. We were all stood at the bottom shaking our heads and just asking ´Why foolish man?!!´ Needless to say he came down very slowly and painstakingly much to everyones amusement. Macho macho man.

Besides from the sand duning there isnt much to do in these parts so Zoe and I have packed up for the next stop. We were so surprised that the only church in Ica has been closed on Easter Sunday afternoon so we will have to make up for that blunder when we get to Arequipa. Happy Easter everyone, please do save me a Creme Egg when I get home....I´m missing English chocolate terribly and the thought of missing the annual Easter Egg hunt is troubling me too. All donations will be greatly appreciated.
