Oh my oh my, what the hell can I say about Edinburgh!?! Spent about a month there....it was great, felt really good to finally be able to kick off the old hiking boots (ok, ok, the old Pumas), throw the rucksack down and get the musty smell of hostels off of my skin and clothing! Stayed with Conrad in a flat on St Stephans Street. It was a pretty full flat, great place, tons of people always in and out....for the month I was there, the flat mates consisted of Rich, 4 Spanish people, Rose, Anna, Amelia, Conrad and myself. The flat was in a wicked location...just a quick 5 minute stroll to Princess St and a 15 min walk to the Royal Mile. Arrived in Edinburgh the day the Festival was starting...the Fringe Festival! For you that may or may not know, Edinburgh is host to the largest art festival in the world, the Fringe Festival is what I am going to mainly talk about, and it is a part of the Festival, it is just a bit more off the cuff, away from the norm of the festival. The Fringe festival is for the street buskers, stand up comedians, cabaret shows and all the like of people that a normal opera snob would very quickly and gladly turn her/his nose up at. Went and saw comedian upon comedian upon comedian, had many pints and with the many pints had many fish suppers (fish and chips) and then endured many hangovers. It was a pretty steady cycle of life for the first few weeks...many hours spent drinking and sleeping and fighting, ok, not really fighting, just spent as much time as possible trying to piss each other off...which I am able to report that Conrad and I are quite good fulfilling.

Ok...the above I wrote a few weeks ago, and it is now Nov 15th and people are VERY frequently reminding me that I am over 2 months behind on my travel log. So, to appease the masses, I am going to very quickly do a blog for the month I was in Scotland. How am I going to do a quick entry for over a month, you ask? Very simple, all I am going to do is cut and paste some emails with a quick note. Lazy you say? Well, I say creative, plus it allows everyone a chance to fulfill their secret desire of knowing what is in other peoples emails (come on, its not just me, admit it....)!

First e-mail, as you may all remember, the English bobbies discovered a terrorist plot to blow up a few airplanes using liquid bombs on August 10th, well, I had a flight on the 11th, shit! Was worried I wouldn't be able to fly from Amsterdam to Edinburgh because tons of airlines had shut down flights....

hi mom and dad...good to hear from you again! Im in Edinburgh now, just got in a few hours ago, my plane was safe and sound, and i only experienced a 1 hour delay....thank god...i was freaking yesterday, though i would
have to spend all day in the airport...haha, and i was even allowed to have a carry on that wasn't a plastic bag!

I know this next e-mail isn't saying much about the amount of alcohol I been consuming while traveling, but hey, after all I am traveling! The amount of booze we drank while touring Europe was a bit much, so getting to Edinburgh was refreshing, it was only night time drinking, not 24/7...

Hi everyone, hope all is doing well!

Just thought that I would write a quick note, seeing as I am now back to a normal state of mind and body and I think I have managed to get my blood alcohol levels down to a decent state of only 3 times over the legal limit! Starting to miss you all, missing having a permanent posse of 50 people, its weird not eating supper with 50+ screaming banshees in the background! The only thing I?m not missing is the Q, always having a 50 person Q is not my idea of fun.

As much fun as Conrad and I were having, we were fighting a fair bit and driving each other nuts! So nuts, we kept going back for more! Don't get me wrong, this next e-mail is me being a drama queen and over reacting, just needed to talk to a friend...

Rha and Cam, you will prob get this today, where as Corinna might not...can you girls be oh so kinda as to give me a way of getting a hold of Corinna. The shit has hit and I need her.

Thanks girls. Love you. Laura.

I have to thank Conrad for showing a fellow sailor and snowboarder a great time in his country, its just now with a little bit of hindsight, I think that sailors might be better off avoiding each other when on holidays. I reckon all sailors might be a little headstrong and too demanding of each other when off the ship and on the high and dry(does anyone out there care to support/oppose my theory?)

One night Conrad and I ventured off to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, with tickets i skillfully purchased on ebay (I managed to get them for only a quid more than the ticketed price and shipping was only a quid fifty Brilliant seats!). Guess who we saw...

Thanks. got it......not sure if I have responded yet or not.....was trashed last night. You know....the usual. Saw Sean Connery.

Started to think about catching a yacht over to Oz. Conrad and I got drunk one night and wrote this e-mail to my company's ships captains, shit! I hope its not as cheesy as I think it sounds....

Subject : Hi all!

Hello all, Laura here!

Hope all is well over in Lower Lakes Land and on the Lakes. Everything is honkey dorey over in the U.K. Completed the European tour a few weeks ago, excellent fun! In Scotland at the present time and about to head over to Ireland, no complaints with the U.K., except it is bloody freezing (I don?t think it?s gone above 18 degrees since the start of August)!

After Ireland I will be heading down to the French Riviera and will be hoping to get a job (the beer tokens are running a bit to low for my liking!) on a yacht to do a crossing over to Australia, it?s cheaper than airfare and more fun than liquid bomb threats.

If you apply online, you need to submit a few written references along with the application. If any of you can find the time I would greatly appreciate a reference. Hope all is well and please say hello to the crew on my behalf!

Best Regards,
Laura

Decided that I didn't want to leave the UK quite yet to work on a yacht, everything would have been rushed, so headed to the Highlands and did a 10 day tour. It was brilliant! explored the Isle of Skye, Lewis and Harris. As well headed to the Orkney Islands and Loch Ness. Not to mention Sterling, Ullapool, John O'Groats, Inverness and Boner bridge. Wonderful time, saw so amazing sights, did a wicked amount of hiking, great home cooking and some every pleasurable socializing with a great group of people! Made some great friends, one of whom was a crazy Canadian from Kanadader and we decided to head travel about with each other for a few days...

would you be interested in going? we could go there saturday day, and leave there to get to glasgow in time to party at a dance bar.

just an idea.. the website doesn't make it sound as cool as the person telling me about it did.

So, thats all I can find in my inbox. Perhaps its not as exciting as I had anticipated, I just didn't save as many emails as I thought I had...so, if you have any good ones, please forward them on....

Then again, I don't think it turned out half bad, nice little change of presentation, keeping things fresh and mixing it up a bit....
