27/5-29/7

Our next destination was to be cape Kolka, which was a bit of a drive away, so we decided to stop at an open air museum on the way. We have now decided not to go to any more of these, at least until peak season. You are meant to get demonstrations of the way life was at the turn of the century, black smiths etc, all people dressed in their costumes, all that sort of stuff. Well we paid, and we saw about 3 people dressed in their gear, doing..... well, nothing! Half the houses you are meant to be able to go in and see were locked, it was a waste of time, and money.

So we continued on our way feeling a little jaded. The drive to Kolka shouldn't have taken us all that long but Latvian roads are a little like Estonian ones, not that great. So we didn't really do much over 90km/hr. The scenery was lovely, thick pine forest accompanied us most of the way, and we only saw the occasional car.

We decided to stop before the cape and continue on the rest of the way the next day. We found a little camp site in a tiny little place called Purciem. There was no one else camping there and the way the owners had set it out there were little gardens and wooden chairs and tables about the place. The old lady came to help us couldn't speak English and after we both struggled for a bit she sent her grand daughter over who did speak English. It was only going to be 6 Lts, so we set up and wandered down to the beach. It had lovely golden sand with pine forest behind, but as it was getting colder and the wind was picking up we decided to go back in the morning.

We have not adjusted to the late sun set yet, and don't seem to be getting to bed until 11:30 or midnight, when it gets dark. It really does stuff your body clock about. So because we go to bed late we don't get up until 10am, and then our days don't get started till late, oh well at least there is plenty of light to make the most of the day.......
We made it down to the beach in the morning, and had the whole place to ourselves. It was wonderful, we got to have our first proper beach sun bake! Still a bit cold for the water though, so no swimming just yet, gosh it has been a long time since I went for a swim.

When we got back to the camp site to pack up and pay, the owners were no where to be found. We didn't know what to do with the money, so we left a little note and the change near the door of the house and left, no one else was around so I hope they got it!
Cape Kolka wasn't too much further away and we got there with out any problems. There really wasn't much here, it is supposed to be wild seas and picturesque scenery, but all we saw was a calm ocean and sand....... Who knows, either way it was windy and cold, so we left. We were now heading to Ventpils, and it was a dirt road all 70km's there. It wasn't in bad condition, but it did take a while. Again we didn't pass many cars, just lots of trees.

We are now in a great camp site, right on the beach with plenty of trees about and good bathrooms. We have spent all afternoon cleaning out the inside of Clive though; he is covered in dust from head to toe! Everything had to come out and get cleaned, tomorrow we hope to look about and then head to Kuldiga.
