Where I stayed

We stayed at the Woodville Palace in Shimla - a beautiful 1930's colonial house.

Upon opening our toiletries in the bathroom - the change in air pressure due to the altitude (2100 feet) caused various items to explode - opening a stick of roll-on deodorant proved almost deadly with the ball blasting out of it, creating a huge mess! Same with Shampoo etc.!

We went to the bar in the evening for a cooling ale - it appeared closed. We asked if it would open and one of the guys who appeared to be very inconvenienced opened the bar and offered Kingfisher (tall bottles) - he promptly returned to check on us every 20 - 30 seconds to make sure we weren't helping ourselves to the bar! Nice!

Belinda chose a French red wine to have with dinner, our waiters (all six of them) obliged by ceremoniously bringing out the bottle. They struggled to open the bottle, whereby I offered to help - and promptly broke their (probably 1930's) wine bottle opener! A pair of plyers appeared within seconds and with six waiters furiously arguing in Hindi the best way to get it open we wondered whether they might hold onto the bottle and twist the room around instead!

Shower taps - completely random! All taps turning different ways.. hmmm.. interesting plumbing. Seeking a coffee the next morning at 6 am, Belinda and I walked about 25mins to the town centre to the only coffee joint there... upon arrival, the security guard (no machine gun today) informed us they opened at 11am - so Masala tea it was back at the hotel!
