Southern Tuscany. Imagine the movie, "Under the Tuscan Sun..." My weekend in Southern Tuscany was very low key because there is not much to do around Tuscany except visit little towns and drink lots of wine. The weekend was supposed to be a relaxing weekend where we would peacefully walk through vineyards and see the rolling hills and windy roads along the countryside. And that it was. Almost to a point where it was toooo relaxing. Needless to say, it was nice to get away from school and take in the beautiful and world famous scenery of Italy.
Our hotel was in the little town of Buoncovento. There was absolutely, and I mean absolutely, nothing going on. There was one pub and only a few shops open. However, it was a pivotal point because we were able to go to many different towns from Buonconvento. On Friday we walked through a vineyard and did wine tasting at a winery. The speciality of the that specific winery was desert wines which we learned were much sweeter. All of the wine we drank the entire weekend was extremely good, considering what I am used to is a 2euro bottle of Pinot Rosse from the Esselungo (supermarket). After the wine tasting we walked around the property and then drove to visit an abbey. The weather was bad so we couldn't do much because it was raining. When we went back to Buonconvento we had a fabulous dinner prepared for us at the hotel. There was pasta, a meat dish, and dessert. SO GOOD.
On Saturday we visited the town of Montepluciano. Here we were able to have lunch and again just see the beautiful scenery of the region. Wine from this town is extremely famous. For a snack we went to a bakery and bough fresh baked bread that was enormous for less than a Euro. After Montepluciano we drove to the Hot Sulfer Springs and had time to swim around and lay in the hot springs. I was thinking that it was going to be like a jacuzzi, but as you went further and further away from the source, the water got colder and colder. It was, however, a great experience and really fun to climb around in the forest and feel the warm water. My suit, however, still smells of sulfur (and it's been washed twice!)
Sunday we visited another Tuscan town and had time to walk around. In this town there were three small streets that were famous: The street of Love, the street of the Kiss, and the street of Luck. We took pictures walking down all of them.
The weekend was pretty slow going. It was nice to visit Tuscany because you always hear so much about it. I'm not sure if I would go back though, maybe to drink more great wine! Ha. I think it is a place Dad would love. You guys should go there.
