Ao Toh Ko Hostel

We took a quick ferry here from Koh Lanta on Christmas day.  We had reservations on the other side of the Island.  The hostel, Ao Toh Koh, is over hyped the the LP and the beach is only "good" as far as Thai Beaches go.  But if you want to get away for all the people on Phi Phi this is definitely the place to go.  The owners are nice, free internet, and a good, reasonably priced restaurant.  They also have long-tails going to/from town everyday.

The hike to town is about 1 hour and 30mins.  We did this hike 3 times and it rained on us every time.  While we have been on the Islands it has been rare to have a sunny day, but 3 days of rain is also rare.  After 50 mins hiking you hit the viewpoint.  There are 5 different ways in the path to chose from, and we picked the correct one last.  It is a steep rock wall, but right over this is the viewpoint.  The signs on the hikes are awful.

One day we hiked into town and ended up staying there all night.  We did not want to pay for a long tail back to our hostel so we just got a room in town.  The town is basically mostly built up again from the Tsunami (too built up in my opinion).  But there are some smashed buildings, piles of bricks and rubbish, and the beach is scattered with bits of building in the sand.  Also a lot of the trees by the shore are missing, you can definitely still see the damage.  We were there for the Tsunami Anniversary, but nothing much happened.  One of the bars sponsored a candle light vigil, but we didn't go.  You really only stay in town if you want to party-lots of bars here.

On the 3rd day we went scuba diving.  Diving here is cheaper than Koh Lanta and the boat ride much shorter.  The dives were great, huge coral reefs.  Plus we saw jelly fish, sea tortoises, and a leopard shark.  On the second dive I lost my buddy, Chris.  He could not equalize at the beginning and I keep decending thinking he was right with me.  The DiveMaster had to swim around and look for him, he was fine, just above us-whoops. On our lunch break we parked at Phi Phi Leh Island . We swam though a tunnel, and walked over to Maya Beach.  This is where "the Beach" was filmed.  It was probably the most beautiful beach I have ever seen.  But no picture since we had to swim to get here.  Many tour boats go here and the beach was packed with people.  Go early morning or late at night if possible.  It would be amazing at these times!

After the dive trip we were suppose to leave but Chris realized he left his journal, the LP, and a novel over at the hostel.  So we had to book another night in town and hike back to the hostel to retrieve the stuff, and of course it rained on us!  But thank goodness they had it.  Although we did have to pry the LP our of a tourists hands and convince them it was ours!Phi Phi has these great water bottle refill stations in town.  They really cut down on the plastic bottle waste.  They should have these on all the islands.
